North Wales Magic Circle – 75 Years Old Today

Today, 4th November 2017, is the 75th Anniversary of the formation of the North Wales Magic Circle at the Gladstone Hotel in Rhyl.

Present were –
Wilf Leyland (President)
John Leckie (Secretary)
Alin Lovatt (Treasurer)
W. A. Carr (Griffin Editor) Vol 1 No 1 published in May 1943
Sam Hughes, Prof. Jenson, Will Lloyd Lawrence, W.R.Watkins and Sid Woods.

From the brainchild of John Leckie who decided to form a magic society as there wasn’t one locally. John attended a function where Sid Woods was performing and who enthusiastically agreed. Sid knew of another magician somewhere ‘eastward along the Coast’, and wrote to ‘Mr. Magician, Mostyn, Flintshire’. Two weeks later, a letter from Sam Hughes of Flint heralded a meeting of the three of them in The Bedford Cafe, Rhyl, leading to the inaugural meeting above.

Information taken from ‘A Brief History’ by Arthur G. Booker, more of which can be found on our website.

Sad news

It is with great shock and deep sadness to tell you that Chris O’Brien passed away today.  Chris was a true gentleman and a loyal friend to many of us and it is indeed a great loss. All members of the North Wales Circle have been informed and as soon as arrangements have been made, a further notice will be sent. However, Wendy informs us that the funeral is likely to be in Dukinfield, Greater Manchester.
